Jamal Musiala was perhaps one of the most surprising people not to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or this year. Despite Bayern Munich failing to lift a single trophy in the 2023/24 season, Musiala shone at the European Championship and Champions League, with the Rekordmeister reaching the semi-finals, losing to eventual champions Real Madrid 4-3 on aggregate.
Speaking after Germany’s 5-0 win over Hungary on Saturday night, Kimmich, the Mannschaft captain and Musiala’s team-mate for club and country, reacted to his compatriot’s non-appointment.
“I don’t know what criteria are used to decide. In fact, the best players should be on the list and Jamal is certainly one of them. He showed it again today,” Kimmich said.
As reported by Sport1, France Football editor-in-chief Vincent Garcia explained the reasons why Musiala was not named. These reasons are linked to his low goal rate in the Champions League, his poor performances in decisive matches and Bayern Munich’s poor season.
Against Hungary, Musiala scored one goal and created three chances. Julian Nagelsmann believes that Musiala, like Florian Wirtz, will win a Ballon d’Or during their career.
