Sept. 6 — MITCHELL — A strong home performance helped the Mitchell junior boys golf team finish in the top five Friday.
The Kernels finished fifth among the 12 teams competing at the Parkston Invite at Lakeview Golf Course, finishing with a team score of 337. Three of Mitchell’s scorers all posted rounds of 84 around Lakeview’s par-72 course.
Among the individual performances, Matthew Mausycki finished in 23rd place, with a score of 43-41 en route to an 84, birdieing the par-5 10th hole. Sam Titze finished in 24th place with a score of 42-42 for an 84, and finished in 25th place with a score of 84 for Canon Moller.
Other Kernel performances included Dawson Adams who shot an 85 to finish 30th, and Tyler Christensen who shot an 85 to finish 32nd. Gavin Polreis finished 59th after a 96.
The event titles were won by West Central, taking both the team and individual championships. In the team standings, the Trojans posted a winning score of 306 to beat Elk Point-Jefferson by three strokes. Sioux Falls Christian came in third with a score of 315, and Lennox finished ahead of the Kernels in fourth with a score of 330.
Individually, defending Class A state champion Anthony Lanham recorded six birdies as the only golfer in the 72-under-par field, posting a 4-under-par 68. EPJ’s Carter Langle came in second with a 1-over 73, followed by Canton’s Carson Steffensen (73), EPJ’s Ben Akin (73) and Chamberlain’s Chase McQuirk (74) to round out the top five.
Among the area teams, Mount Vernon/Plankinton came in seventh with a 338, led by Trysten Eide with a 7-over 79. Winner (341) was eighth, while Karson Keiser shot an 81 to lead the Warriors. Parkston’s Landon Weber shot an 81 as the hosts earned a ninth-place finish (351). Chamberlain (370) went home in 11th place.
