As previously reported, the time has come for Manchester City to look to regenerate their midfield in the near future. One of the players who could be targeted to help regenerate City’s midfield is Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. The young midfielder has impressed since joining Palace from Blackburn Rovers in January. Now, a new report suggests that if Manchester City do intend to make a move for Wharton, they are likely to face competition from Liverpool for his signature.

Sami Mokbel reported to the Daily Mail that Manchester City and Liverpool are closely monitoring Adam Wharton’s progress. Additionally, Mokbel adds that a number of other clubs are also tracking the young midfielder.

It’s no surprise that Manchester City will have to fight to sign Adam Wharton.

It’s no surprise to see Adam Wharton linked with the likes of City and Liverpool. The young midfielder has shown during his time at Blackburn Rovers and Crystal Palace that he has the tools and temperament to thrive at the highest level. Since joining Crystal Palace, he has emerged as one of the most promising young midfielders in the Premier League. Playing as a number six, Wharton has shown that he has defensive maturity beyond his years. It’s a trait that bodes well for a move to a bigger club. Going forward, he also has the game to be a weapon when his team have possession. His passing and goal-scoring skills are such that he becomes a weapon when Palace have possession. For a 20-year-old, he seems like a complete midfielder.

It is no surprise that Manchester City have chosen Wharton as their player of the future. The time will come when the champions will have to find a player who can assist Rodri in midfield. Mateo Kovacic currently plays that role in Pep Guardiola’s team. The Croatian midfielder has started the 2024/2025 season impressively by occupying Rodri’s position. But the Croatian international is 30 years old. At some point, the champions will have to regenerate their midfield with fresh legs. Adam Wharton could be one of those players who could add youth and talent to City’s midfield over time.

It’s no surprise to see that Sami Mokbel’s report states that Liverpool are also monitoring Adam Wharton. The young midfielder is a player who will attract interest from a host of clubs in England and Europe. He’s that good. If Manchester City identify Wharton as a player who can regenerate their midfield, they will do everything to ensure that he decides that a move to the Etihad is the best step for his young career. This could be something to watch out for next summer if the world champions see Wharton as the ideal player to add to their midfield stock.
