Real Madrid’s persistent injury problems will likely force coach Carlo Ancelotti to adjust his defensive strategies.
With key players like David Alaba, Eder Militao and Aurelien Tchouameni out for the upcoming clash against Real Sociedad, Dani Carvajal could unexpectedly become a vital player for the Italian coach.
It should be noted that last season Carvajal was asked to play in a central defensive role in two consecutive league games at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Carvajal has a lot of experience
Carvajal’s experience at centre-back dates back to the 2021-22 Champions League semi-final against Chelsea. In extra time of the second leg, with just a few minutes left, Carvajal replaced Nacho after all the substitutes had been exhausted.
Alongside Alaba, he bolstered the defence, helping to contain Chelsea’s attacking threats. His performance was commendable, as he and Jesus Vallejo successfully defended against Manchester City in the semi-final second leg, once again in extra time.
In the derby against Atlético de Madrid, he teamed up with Nacho at right central defender. Later, in a crucial match against Girona, where both teams were fighting for the top spots in the league, he teamed up with Tchouameni in central defense.
It was particularly difficult because Militao and Alaba were both injured. Militao had been out since the opening game of the season and Alaba had been injured in November. Rudiger also got injured in the game against Getafe, which further weakened the team.
Additionally, Tchouameni was suspended for one match due to a yellow card against Getafe. Despite this setback, Carvajal and Nacho managed to defend well in the 1-1 draw against Atlético.
In the match against Girona, Carvajal was selected by Tchouameni, with Nacho absent due to a muscle injury. Real secured a resounding victory, thanks to Camavinga’s excellent performance in protecting the defence and Lunin who managed to keep a clean sheet.
If Ancelotti is to rely on Carvajal in a central role again, there is confidence in his ability to deliver top-class performances. The club captain is consistently up to the task, demonstrating his versatility and reliability on the pitch.
